U-Mass Professor Brings
Digital Storytelling Seminar to TAS

Gloria DiFulvio, Assistant Professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, will be visiting The Art School this winter. DiFulvio will be offering a three-day seminar in January geared to educators, health care professionals, and individuals who are interested in creating or teaching Digital Stories, the newest wave of memoir. This combines personal narrative with image and sound to create a short digital story. Digital Storytelling has been used
to chronical the personal journeys of cancer survivors, Holocaust survivors, immigrants and teens. Prof. DiFulvio was trained in the digital storytelling process through the Center for Digital Storytelling in Berkely, CA. Currently, she is working on several digital storytelling projects including giving voice to students in recovery from substance abuse.

November 2: Under the Feet of Jesus, by Helena Maria Viramontes
Instructor: Andrei Guruianu
In Viramontes’s first novel, she paints a desperate portrait of the Mexican-American experience, specifically that of migrant workers in California. The novel depicts the plight of laborers working under unbearable heat, being sprayed with pesticides, and the lack of privacy in which they live their lives. Despite the miserable situation in which they find themselves, Viramontes is able to show that while the spirit can at times be stretched to its limits, it can nonetheless transcend such conditions. Viramontes teaches at Cornell University.
